In this competition entry for the San Jose State University in California, the museum was envisioned not just as a repository of high art but a place of experimentation and innovation, where the definition of art is constantly challenged; a place that is equally accessible to scholars, students, and the lay community. Access and porosity are key elements of the design, generating a series of intermediate outdoor and indoor spaces that extend the public realm and mediate between the street and the highly controlled, state of the art, exhibition, performance, and educational spaces.
Seen as crucial in the dialogue about art and in the nurturing of creativity, the 'architectural promenade' promotes social and intellectual interaction, informal exhibitions, spontaneous events, performances, and discussions
