Eri Muga Net Scarf
Eri Muga Net Scarf
For centuries, the craft of weaving has been passed down through generations of women in the villages of Northeastern India. The scarves in this collection, inspired by the gifts of handwoven fabric traditionally exchanged in this region during the Spring, present a contemporary opportunity to extend a unique tradition.
ERI is the most sustainable of all the silks, as the structure of the cocoon from which Eri is made is not as compact as the mulberry or Muga cocoons and it cannot be reeled. Instead it is "spun" from shorter lengths of silk and the Eri moth is allowed to emerge from its cocoon and complete its natural life cycle. The Philosamia Ricini silkworm from which Eri is made feeds on the castro plant.
MUGA, the golden-yellow silk found only in the Brahmaputra valley, is produced by the Antherea Assama silkworm. The worms feed on the leaves of the Som and Soalu trees. Five to ten individual silk fibers are reeled together to form one silk thread and several silk threads are wound together to form a yarn of silk. It is extremely strong and durable, gaining more gloss and shine with every wash. Muga is highly valued for its unique natural golden color and it is traditionally not dyed.
Each piece is 100% silk, hand-woven in the villages of Assam, India. The naturally occurring variations are part of the beauty of these organic silks. A portion of the proceeds from DREAMWEAVE is reinvested to sustain the culture of weaving and support the livelihood of the women and their communities.
